The characters are very well drawn. The author did a great work in capturing the rhythm of people speaking. The food! Yum — fabulous descriptions...a terrific job of capturing a time and place — how they lived, died, worked, ate and loved.

History is made of one story at a time. This book is so needed. It captures the memory of a truly significant era in African American history. The memories of this timeframe positions us to understand the whys of then and now. This is a story that speaks for a generation that is slowly losing its voice. This story needed to be told. This story needs to be heard.
